Leipzig University is one of the oldest universities in Germany, and our art collection is amoung the most important university collections in Germany. Works of European painting, sculpture, graphic art and handicrafts from the Middle Ages to the present provide an insight into the eventful 600-year history of a university steeped in tradition. Our collection contains numerous objects of historical and cultural interest.
Our masterpieces have been exhibited and published, other objects remain still unpublished. Inventory catalogues have not been released so far. The collection database provides an insight into the extent and variety of our collection. It enables researchers and the interested public to explore the collection.
This project is "work in progress": The database is not yet completed, however the majority of our holdings are registered. The data records contain works of painting, sculpture and graphic art, exhibited or stored objects, but also works of art that have been destroyed or are missing. Works of art which were produced after 1940 can currently not be published for reasons of copyright. We are happy to receive notifications of errors. All images are subject to copyright.
We would like to express our special thanks to "Vereinigung der Förderer und Freunde der Universität Leipzig e. V." for supporting our online collection project.
