Our tasks

We are a central institution of Leipzig University and perform the classic museum tasks of collecting, preserving, researching and communicating. We look after the art holdings of Leipzig University.

We have links with many cultural institutions, university museums and other collections.

The history of our institution

Leipzig University has been collecting works of art ever since its foundation in 1409. However, it was not until the 1970s that the management of the collection was institutionalised. Here’s the story.
