The word comes from Latin: ‘custos’ means ‘overseer, guardian, watchman’. The custos is the curator of a collection or museum institution. They are responsible for looking after and protecting the art collection. In German-speaking countries, the word ‘Kustodie’ is used for the art collections of a university or college.

The final vowel – the ‘e’ at the end of the word – is not spoken. The final syllable is stressed.
